Public Sector Final Salary Pensions - Workers Fight Back with Strikes - Pension Transfers Ltd

Teachers, nurses, firefighters and other public sector workers have been under no illusion that their pensions faced a major overhaul. Recently we were all effected by the as public sector workers have started to fight back. Unions and MPs are still in discussions as the Coalition intends to go ahead with many of the proposals laid down by Lord Hutton in his report on public sector pensions.
So what will the impact be? We will need to wait and see what the full changes will be. However, the following are the likely changes that will be introduced
- Increases to contributions?
- Later retirement ages?
- Final salary pension replaced by Career Average pension = LOWER pension
What happens to my UK pension when I emigrate?
If you have a UK pension (including Public Sector schemes) and you are emigrating to Australia, you may not have considered the implication of leaving this valuable asset behind in the UK. In fact, it may prove extremely beneficial for you to transfer your pension with you as benefits can be accessed tax-free.
Leaving your pension intact in the UK could expose you to the following pitfalls: -
- Exposure to tax on benefits
- Exposure to currency risk on benefits payable
- No access to benefits before 55 (or even later for some UK schemes)
- Nil death benefits for your beneficiaries in some instances
Transferring your UK pension to Australia may result in you experiencing the following advantages: -
- Tax free benefits at age 60.
- Currency control when benefits are transferred (you decide when to switch the funds to Australian dollars)
- Investment control - you decide which funds you invest in
- 100% of fund paid to beneficiaries in the event of your death
Be sure to seek independent financial advice applicable to your individual circumstances, as transferring pensions is not for everyone. You should look to use a company that is authorised and knows the rules in both countries, to ensure you receive the best advice and service.
